SUMMARY:Supporting Individuals with Mild to Moderate Dementia
DESCRIPTION:Supporting Individuals with Mild to Moderate Dementia \nInstructors: Brittany Lueken\, LMSW\, and Cheryl Kinney\, LCSW \nEvent Information \n\nThis event is will offer CEU credits totaling 1.5 hours for LPCs\, LCSWs\, LMFTs\nIf you are a Psychotherapy Saint Louis member this training is free; please be sure you are logged in when registering.\n\nEvent Description:\nNon-pharmacological interventions are recommended as the first line of support for individuals living with mild to moderate memory loss\, yet research to support these interventions is not widely available and few community-based programs exist. \nThis workshop reviews evidence-based and evidence-informed interventions including psychotherapy\, Cognitive Stimulation Therapy\, Reminiscence Therapy\, Life Review\, and person-centered care\, in an effort to prepare dementia-capable practitioners and expand programming to enhance the quality of life of this population. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nUnderstand the importance and efficacy of non-pharmacological interventions for mild-moderate dementia.\nKnow several evidence-based interventions for dementia\, their components\, and how they are delivered.\nConceptualize how one can incorporate them into their own work with clients.\n\nInstructor Bios\n \nBrittany Lueken\, LMSW is a former Montessori teacher with a passion for working with older adults that started when she began taking care of her grandmother\, who had Alzheimer’s. She continues to be influenced by Montessori in her work with older adults\, which provides a methodology for constructive communication\, fostering independence\, self-efficacy and the cultivation of a community rooted in respect and dignity. \nCheryl Kinney\, LCSW is a psychotherapist and certified life coach with over 35 years experience working with older adults and caregivers. Cheryl teaches university-level courses on aging and recently launched a private counseling practice after working over 24 years for the Alzheimer’s Association.  Cheryl has lost her father\, his parents and several of their siblings to Alzheimer’s disease. \nTogether\,  Britt and Cheryl share a passion for enhancing the lives of individuals with memory loss and supporting their care partners. They realized through their experiences that while there are many supportive services available for caregivers throughout the disease and supportive services available for those in the moderate to late stage of dementia\, resources are lacking or not well known to those in the mild to moderate stage. Britt and Cheryl have made a commitment to change that.

You will learn what drama therapy is specifically\, how to get further training in drama therapy if you are interested and have a chance to experience drama therapy for yourself. \nThis 5-minute video is Bessel Van der Kolk sharing how theatre can rewire limiting beliefs: https://youtu.be/4oSTNPot0FY \nLearning Objectives: \n\nParticipants will understand the principles and concepts of Drama Therapy.  \nParticipants will become familiar with the therapeutic implication of using Drama Therapy interventions.\nParticipants will be able to utilize and apply this process into their therapy work.\nParticipants will become familiar with the process of attaining a Registered Drama Therapist credential.\n\nInstructor Bio: Paula Heller spent 27 years running a high school theatre program in St. Louis\, MO.  For the past 7 years\, Paula’s focus changed to therapeutic theatre\, working through Stages St. Louis to bring healing through theatre workshops in various schools in and around St. Louis.  Paula also worked with various populations through various theatre organizations such as Prison Performing Arts\, Queen of Peace Addiction program\, The Jewish Community Center Disability theatre and Youth Theatre.  For the past three years alongside her private practice in St. Louis\, she has run the Independence Center Players program which is part of the Independence Center Clubhouse.
