SUMMARY:A Different Way of Helping Couples Get Along: Stop Focusing on Agreement
DESCRIPTION:A Different Way of Helping Couples Get Along: Stop Focusing on Agreement \nEvent Information: \n\nThis event is will be for CEU credits totaling 1.5 hours for LPCs\, LCSWs\, LMFTs\nIf you are a Psychotherapy Saint Louis member this training is free\, please be sure you are logged in when registering.\n\nEvent Descriptions: \nAs clinicians\, we may provide a disservice to our clients when we focus on couple agreement. Even reaching  a point of “agree-to-disagree and drop it” — is seldom effective to restore long term connection between verbally combative partners. On significant matters\, a couple’s joint or even one’s solitary push for agreement can upset the relationship balance. The push can reinforce both or either’s need to “be right”. This position is counterproductive. As clinicians\, we land in a position of promoting divisiveness. A chronic  “right/wrong” mentality in a relationship creates disrespect\, disconnection\, and the potential for an intolerant\, controlling\, or abusive couple dynamic. \nThe PPoP process was developed over 34 years of experience in private practice therapy and is based on CBT and anecdotal client data. Using the PPoP graph\, clients can see the choices they are making  and locate themselves on one of seven descending levels of relationship health and happiness. Couples can identify and understand how negative outcomes develop directly from their interaction across three interrelated columns—behavior\, results\, and emotions. Couple can see the upward pathway to getting along better. Conversely\, the downward path to relationship destruction is equally clear. \nAs a visual aid\, the PPoP graph reveals actions to both avoid and take when a couple’s disagreements impair  getting along. The PPoP suggests possibilities to consider alongside  goals and directions for change. Clients  are encouraged to make a plan and may record it on an action sheet to implement at home. \nThe objectives of this workshop are: \n\nExplore personal/professional beliefs and values about “agreement” and “being right”.\nConsider new possibilities\, aside from agreement\, as viable and valuable options for getting along.\nLearn The PPoP process to assist clients in recognizing their damaging relationship patterns and increase getting along.\nHelp couples build strong relationships that thrive in the face of disagreement.\n\nTrainer: Dr. Patt Pickett will be presenting this training. Dr. Pickett specializes in helping relationship issues and developing emotional intelligence. Below is background of her education and publication experience. \nEducation/Credentials/Memberships \n\nDoctorate in Education St. Louis University\nMaster’s Degree in Education/Counseling—     University of Missouri at St. Louis\nBachelor of Arts/Sociology—                         University of Missouri at St. Louis\nLicensed Marriage/Family Therapist\nPast member for 25 yrs.—American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT)\nMissouri Writers’ Guild (MWG)\nMissouri Certified Teacher\nSocial/Emotional Intelligence Certified Coach\n\nProfessional History \n\n2004 –Present –Co-Owner St. Louis Emotional Intelligence Center LLC\, a Division of HireCoach™\n1987-2004–Independent professional counseling/coaching practice\nPrior tenure as a Probation/Parole Officer for the federal courts and state government\n\nPresentations / Writing Achievements \n\n2021—Upcoming author of The Relationship Keeper Series of wellness resources including books\, coloring books\, card decks\, and online presentations.\nAuthor of  multi-award winning book: The Marriage Whisperer 2013 MSI Press- California\n2017 Expert Conference Panelist on Emotional intelligence for Express Scripts\n2016 Workshop Presenter on Emotional Intelligence for the Lutheran Church Mo. Using selective snapshots\, Steven will invite clinicians to explore the legacy of mental health treatment and to critically examine the ways in which we each\, individually and collectively\, continue to contribute to that legacy. Throughout this examination\, participants will familiarize themselves with creative writing techniques\, such as erasure/blackout poetry\, letter writing\, list making\, and the golden shovel\, as a means of empowering individuals and subverting this history. Participants are asked to come prepared to write and to reflect. \nCourse Outline: \n\nWorkshop will begin with a land acknowledgment\, general introductions\, and a grounding exercise.\nParticipants will be invited to identify for themselves something they struggle with\, then to personify this struggle in a being or creature. The workshop will be framed as a journey alongside this being/creature.\nSteven will discuss Eugen Bleuler and the origins of the terms ‘schizophrenia’ and ‘autism’.\nParticipants will then be invited to reflect on the being/creature that they have chosen and to list what they love about them\, listing as many things as possible in a given time.\nSteven will then discuss the history of the Central State Hospital in Virginia and the Virginia Sterilization Act of 1924.\nParticipants will be guided through a letter writing process addressed to the being/creature that they have chosen.\nSteven will end by discussing more recent history\, such as the APA’s involvement in the 9/11 “Torture Memos”\, and the cemeteries that remain across the United States from the state hospital system.\nParticipants will complete a blackout/erasure poem on the letter that they have written.\nClosing dialogue and Q&A.\n\nLearning Objectives: \nParticipants will be expected to: \n\ngain an understanding of the history of mental health treatment in the United States.\nbecome versed in the use of poetry as a therapeutic modality.\nexperience firsthand the importance of introspection\, authenticity\, radical witnessing\, validation\, and self-reflection as necessary to ensuring the safety and well-being of both client and clinician.\nbecome familiar with dialectical thinking.\nincrease their awareness of power dynamics within the therapeutic alliance and the larger legacy of mental health treatment.\nsee poetry and performance as a means of subverting historic systems of oppression\, marginalization\, and exploitation by empowering individuals and communities to own their stories.\n\nBio: \nSteven T. Licardi\, LMSW is a writer and mental health advocate whose work sits at the intersections of art and social policy. He (usually) travels domestically and internationally using the power of spoken word to create empathic dialogue around\, to confront the realities of\, and to assist communities in dismantling the stigma surrounding mental health. As a child\, Steven was diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum\, an experience that deeply informs his work. Since 2016\, his ever-evolving performance series Coup de Mot has been confronting how mental illnesses manifest out of oppressive social pathologies\, with versions appearing in Vigo\, Spain in 2016\, in Edmonton\, Alberta\, Canada in 2018\, and in Thessoliniki\, Greece in 2019. His most recent collection of poems\, a billion burning dreams (STL\, 2018) traces his own mental health journey from patient to professional. www.thesvenbo.com/books \n

SUMMARY:Transformational Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:Francesca Ferrentelli\, PhD\, LPC\, BCC is a Jungian influenced therapist in private practice. She is a certified EMDR therapy clinician and has been a therapist for nearly thirty years. In her practice she specializes in trauma\, addictions\, eating disorders\, and adult children of alcoholics. She earned a Master’s Degree in Professional Psychology from Lindenwood University in 1993\, and a Doctorate in Mythological Studies from Pacifica Graduate Institute in 2003. She is the author of The Zebra and the Black Pony\, a children’s book that can be used for Transformational Storytelling. \nAbout the Presentation \n1 Credit-Free to Psychotherapy Saint Louis Members-$15 for Guests \nStories and storytellers have been around for thousands of years. Powerful stories allow us become engrossed in the drama of the narrative. We can relate to the characters but they are separate from us. This layer of separation breaks through defenses and helps people see things from a different perspective. Transformational storytelling uses the power of story to move the participants. It can be done individually or in groups. The Zebra and the Black Pony was written for transformational storytelling. Francesca will tell the story and teach the participants how to use this technique. She learned this technique from Michael Meade\, (the noted mythologist and storyteller) during her studies at Pacifica Graduate Institute.
